William Michael Hurt

March 26, 1951 — August 21, 2012

Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2012 at Hillside Christian Church Chapel with Bob Schroeder officiating.  Arrangements by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral Home, 8310 S. Coulter.
Bill was born and raised in Amarillo.  He graduated from Palo Duro High School in 1970.  He was an outstanding athlete during his High School career at PD and also played football at TCU.  He married Carolyn Hamel on March 3, 1973 in Amarillo.  Bill spent many years in the food service business and worked for Walsh, Monarch and Affiliated Foods.  He was also a loyal employee for Scottco for many years.  He had been working as a mail clerk at the Veterans Hospital from 1996 until the time of his passing.  In spite of his stroke in 1993 he displayed Godly strength, character and perseverance.  He loved Duke Basketball, the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers and was a huge Texas Tech fan.  Bill coached Little Dribblers, Kids Inc. and AAU Basketball and was instrumental in the development of many young lives.  He enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin in Sipapu, NM.  Bill was a loving and devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather and brother.  He especially adored his precious grandchildren, and was  affectionately known as “Papa”.   Bill was a guy who never met a stranger and his favorite saying was “Life is Good”.  He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.  He was preceded in death by his father William Hurt in 2003

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; his son Jim Brent Hurt and wife Jennifer of Flower Mound; his mother, Dorothy Hurt of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Chandler Hurt and Braxton Hurt both of Flower Mound; two sisters, Cathy Kunce and husband Gary of Colorado Springs, CO and Peggy Hurt of Amarillo; his brother, Gene Hurt and wife Mary Ann of Amarillo and several loving nieces, nephews and family members.
