William Thomas Cargill

February 9, 1928 — July 21, 2013

William “Bill” Thomas Cargill

LAMPASAS- William “Bill” Thomas Cargill, 85, of Lampasas, formerly of Amarillo, went on to glory Sunday, July 21, 2013.  Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in LaGrone Blackburn-Shaw Coulter Road Chapel with Lyndon Latham officiating.  Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.  Arrangements are by LaGrone Blackburn-Shaw, 8310 S. Coulter Road, Amarillo, TX.

Bill was born February 9, 1928 in Lockney, Texas to Thomas and Anita Parish Cargill.  He married Ruby Jewel Cargill in Amarillo in 1951.  They enjoyed 46 wonderful years together before her death in 1997.  He remarried Dorothy “Dot” McBride in 1999 where they spent his remaining years happily married in Lampasas.

At Lockney High School Bill was a four year letterman on the football team where he was known as “Tank”.  He boxed in several Golden Glove tournaments throughout the Texas Panhandle before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1946 at the age of 18.  He honorably served his country in the post World War II Marine Corps operations in China and was the epitome of why his generation was known as “The Greatest Generation”.  After his return, Bill went to work for Santa Fe railroad in 1950 loading box cars and retired as a yard master in 1986.  After retirement he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.

Bill was a devout and faithful Christian husband, father, and grandfather who lived his life, by words and deeds, in the image of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Bill and Ruby were founding members of Fairlane Church of Christ where he served as an elder for several decades.  After moving to Lampasas in 2005, he and Dorothy became members of the First Street Church of Christ where they cherished the hospitality and Christian fellowship of their new church family.  Bill was the patriarch of the Cargill family and while words can not express how much he will be missed, the Christian life he led will serve as an example and goal for generations.

Meeting him in glory were his parents and his wife of 46 years, Ruby along with his son Dale Chapman.  Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Cargill; brother Truett Cargill, sisters Ida Mae Sease, Lucille Settle and husband, Richard Settle, and Betty Davis; sons Gerald Okerson and wife, Nola Okerson, David Cargill and wife, Patty Cargill, and daughter Susan Priestly and husband Richard Priestly; grandchildren Thomas Cargill and wife, Monica Cargill, Cheryl Compton and husband, Brian Compton, Matt Kimsey and wife, Janelle Kimsey, Will Kimsey and wife, Brittani Kimsey, Erick Kimsey, and Clint Kimsey; and 8 great grandchildren.

Family will be receiving visitors at 3403 Carlton Drive, Amarillo, TX, after the burial at Llano Cemetery.
