Walter was born on October 22, 1905 to the late John Ervin Boatwright and Leonora Gunn Boatwright. He graduated from Baird High School and Draughton’s Business School in Abilene, TX and attended Abilene Christian College. In 1926 he hitchhiked to Amarillo with $9.38 in his pocket. He had a job with the railroad for a short time before going to work for Phillips Petroleum Company. While with Phillips, he resided in Pasadena and Borger, TX and Bartlesville, OK. He left Phillips in 1962 to become a civilian pilot instructor for the army with Coleman Flying Service, in Coleman, TX.
Boat married Orpha Montzella Thorn on March 2, 1929. She preceded him in death on their 73rd wedding anniversary, March 2, 2002.
Boat was a Deacon and active member of Temple Baptist Church. He became a Mason in 1928 and was a member of the Amarillo Masonic Lodge #731. He was given an eighty-year award in 2008.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife ”Montie”, two sons, William Don Boatwright in 2006 and Frederick Von Boatwright in 2008; two sisters, Kathryn Van Quirk and Thelma Lois Smith; and one brother, John Virgil Boatwright. He is survived by a daughter in law, Pat Boatwright, a grandson, James Boatwright and wife Joyce, a granddaughter, Kathie Sanderson and husband John, 5 great-grandchildren, Caleb Sanderson and wife Alicia, Tyson Sanderson and wife Alex, Kristin Sanderson, Scott Sanderson, and Regan Boatwright; two great-great granddaughters, Madeline Sanderson and Anika Sanderson, and a special cousin, Marilyn Taylor.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Meals on Wheels, or to Temple Baptist Church, 3208 S. Van Buren, Amarillo, TX 79109.
