Vilda Marie Smith

Vilda Marie Smith, 93, of Amarillo passed away on Monday, Nov. 21, 2011.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 26, 2011 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Stake Center, 2101 N. Coulter St., with Bishop Blaine Barton officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.

Mrs. Smith was born June 25, 1918, in El Paso to Adelbert and Lucille Taylor. She was raised in Mexico and grew up in the Mormon colony of Colonia Dublan in Chihuahua. On Oct. 13, 1945, she married Carl M. Smith in El Paso. Carl passed away in 1998.

Mrs. Smith attended business school in El Paso, which ultimately led her to NWTH, working in the business office of the Pavilion for more than 15 years. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and remained active there as long as she was able. Above all, she loved her family. She spent most of her time focusing on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She studied her family history and loved spending time researching her genealogy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; a sister; and her husband, Carl M. Smith, in 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Barton and wife Roberta of Amarillo and Ronald Barton of Ashland, Ore.; a daughter, Carla Dirk and husband Robert of Las Vegas; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive guests from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, November 25, 2011 at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Fund, 2101 N. Coulter St., Amarillo, TX 79124.
