Verlin was born on May 16, 1916 in Stonewall County, Texas to John Robert and Mary Elizabeth Martin. He went to work for the Amarillo Globe New Times in 1939 and worked until 1979 when he retired. He received a 25 year award from the Globe News in 1964. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo.
He is survived by a daughter, Verlayne and husband Vick Shugart of Frisco, Tx; a son, Larry and his wife Paula Martin of Arlington, Tx; a step daughter, Judy York of Longview, Tx; a step son, Michael Cook of Longview, Tx; grandsons, Richard and wife Jennifer Greer of Corinth, Tx. and Russell and wife Natascha Martin of Arlington, TX; granddaughters, Robyn and husband Joe D. Petty of Little Elm, Tx. and Shelly and husband Ernest Terry of North Richland Hill, Tx.
4 step grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren
Verlin is preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn Martin in 1979 and his second wife, Vida Martin in 2000. His Stepdaughter Janice Davidson in 2008, both of his parents and 11 brothers and sisters.
