Thoi T. Nguyen, 65, of Amarillo died April 21, 2015. He was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam on
November 29, 1949. He was the youngest of eight children of Minh Van Nguyen and Thong Thi
Bui. He graduated from Ba Ninh High School in Nha Trang in 1967. He served during the
Vietnam War as part of the South Vietnamese Military Police. He held the rank equivalent to
Master Sergeant.
After the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, Thoi escaped aboard the commercial ship Truong Xuan
and then was rescued by the ship Clara Maersk. Eventually, through Catholic Family Services,
Thoi was sponsored by the Shaw family and moved to Oxford, Mississippi. In 1984, Thoi moved
to Amarillo, TX. He married Xuyen T. Nguyen at St. Martin of Vietnam Church on November 16,
1985.
Thoi is an active member of Our Lady of Vietnam Catholic Church and an elected officer of the
Vietnamese Mutual Benefit Association of Amarillo. Thoi’s main occupation was as a drafter of
cabinet designs and a carpenter. He is also a talented artist and a poet.
He leaves his beloved wife, Xuyen Thi Nguyen; his daughter Nhu Hoang Thi Nguyen and her
husband Buu and daughter, Tue Nhi of Saigon, Vietnam; his daughter Hoang Lan Thi Nguyen
(Heather Dunson White) and her husband Jay and children Caitlin, Corbin, and Ethan, of
Chalybeate, Mississippi. He also leaves his sons; Quy, Bao, and Vinh Nguyen.
Memorial Services will be held at Our Lady of Vietnam Church on 2001 N. Grand St. on Saturday,
April 25, 2015 at 10 A.M. with Rev. John Tran presiding. The funeral home will be LaGrone
Blackburn-Shaw on 1505 Martin Road. Viewings will be held on Saturday 1-7 P.M. and Sunday
5-8 P.M. A procession will be held on Monday, April 27 starting at 10 A.M. from the funeral home
to Memorial Gardens for the cremation.
