Shirley J. Gidney, 79, previously of Inwood, West Virginia, residing in Amarillo passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 2, 2017 in Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1215 N. Hughes with Rev. Vurn Martin, officiating. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery East. Arrangements are under the personal care of LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors, 1505 Martin Road.
Born on January 24, 1938 born to the late Robert M. and Eldora A. Manning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life of 56 years of marriage, Rev. Robert E. Gidney, three brothers, a son James P. Gidney, a granddaughter Sheryl A. Gidney and a grandson, Jon Gidney Jr.
Left to cherish her memories are: son John Gidney Sr. and wife Shaniek of Charlestown, West Virginia; daughter Nichole Jackson-Cousins and husband Kingsley of Winchester, Virginia; brother Don Manning and wife Ann of Amarillo, Texas; 8 grandchildren: Jon III, Johvan, Jahnevaeh, Jaheim and Jhoné Gidney all of Charlestown, West Virginia, Charity Gidney-Burns of Winchester, Virginia, Alex Moore of San Diego, California, Naomi Cousins of Winchester, Virginia; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends.
Shirley began her career as Co-Owner of Lasher’s Hair and Boutique in Bluefield, West Virginia and later went on to retire from Mercer County School where she was the Executive Head Cook. She also was Co-owner of Rob’s Cleaning Services from 1993- 2012 with her late husband.
Most importantly, she is a child of God and received her salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. She was a loving and devoted member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Duffields, West Virginia, where she served as President of the Missionary Society, while also serving on the Usher Board.
She always faced life head-on and showed no fear. Her smile covered many heartaches. Her most precious and dearest to her heart with unconditional love for her grandchildren, “Granny loves you.”
The family of the late Shirley J. Gidney, wish to express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the many comforting acts of love and kindness extended to us during our time of bereavement.
