Rudolph "Rudy" Wesel, 80, of Amarillo died on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Martin Road Chapel with Corky Holland of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors, 1505 Martin Road.

Rudy Wesel was born on March 18, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY to Rudolph and Marie Wesel. He was the youngest of five children and the only son. He graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School in 1953 and enlisted in the United State Air Force in 1954. During his career in the Air Force, he was an aircraft mechanic and then a technical instructor. He serviced the B-47 Stratabomber and the F-101 Voodoo Fighter until discharging in 1958 as an Airman First Class. Rudy then was hired on at the Helium plant in Amarillo working his way from a helper to an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist (GS-11) and retired in 1994. During his career, Rudy was recognized for several awards. In August 1994, Rudy was given the Award of Merit, from the United States Department of the Interior for appreciation for Outstanding Safety Services. This was only the fourth Award of Merit ever to be given out since it was established. In October of 1994, Rudy was given the Certificate for Appreciation for over thirty eight years of dedicated service to the Department of the Interior, Helium Field Operations.

Rudy was a mechanical and creative genius. He was a master wood worker and his creative genius allowed him to create and build furniture. He was also a photographer and self-taught engineer and draftsman that designed and built additions to the house. As documented by his awards, Rudy had an incredible work ethic that was passed down to his sons that they used to succeed in all phases of their lives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jeane and four sisters.

He is survived by two sons, Rudy Wesel III of Dallas and Joe Wesel and wife Bonnie of Amarillo; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The family will be receiving friends from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, Monday, April 4, 2016 at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road.
