Roy Lee Higgins

Roy Lee "Starvo" Higgins, 92, of Amarillo passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2011.

Mr. Higgins funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road, with the Rev. John Elser officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Petersburg Cemetery in Petersburg, TX.

Mr. Higgins was born Sept. 6, 1918, in Borden County, TX to James Higgins and Dollie Hood. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944. He was stationed at Fort McClellan in Alabama, serving as a drill instructor. He was honorably discharged in 1946.  He married Lillie Cross on June 3, 1939, in Plainview. She preceded him in death on July 27, 1992.  Roy lived in Petersburg until 1960 when he moved to Springfield, Colo., where he was the owner and manager of Baca County Implement Co. He moved to Amarillo in 1968 where he pursued many business ventures.  Roy was a 3rd Degree Mason Masonic Lodge in Petersburg, a member of the Lion's Club and a past member of the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Higgins; and four brothers, Harmon, Bud, Billy and Leslie Higgins.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynda Barksdale of Amarillo; a son, John Higgins of Amarillo; a brother, Chester "Jack" Higgins of Amarillo; three sisters, Myrtle Cason of Fort Worth, Thelma Wood of Modesto, Calif., and Nellie Merle Boase of Ft. Worth; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo Veteran Community Living Center, 6010 W. Amarillo Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or Amarillo Alzheimer's Association, 1400 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106.
