Reverend Robert E. Gidney, 84 of Amarillo, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Funeral services will be Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Great Mt. Olive Baptist Church 1215 N. Hughes with Rev. Vurn C. Martin, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery. LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors of Amarillo, Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road is in charge of arrangements.
Robert was born on November 23, 1929 unto Robert Edwards and Lillian Scott Gidney in Bramwell, West Virginia. Robert graduated from Bluestone High School in Bluestone, West Virginia. He later graduated from college with a Bachelors degree from the University of Kansas and later entered the Army Air Force being honorably discharged on In Feb. 18, 1951.
He married Shirley Manning on August 2, 1958 . Robert was a man who loved his family, his church and his God. He was pastor of Mt. Zion AME Church in Duffields, WV for 18 years. He was also an avid Texas Rangers fan and in his retirement enjoyed building model airplanes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one sister and a granddaughter
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Shirley of the home. A son John Gidney and his Shaniek of Kernesville, WV. Three daughters Nichole Cousins and Kingsley of Winchester VA., Jacqueline Simmons (niece) and Donnita Manning (niece) both of Amarillo. A brother in law Don Allen Manning and his wife Ann of Amarillo. Two nieces Trina Roberson of Amarillo, and Endress Manning of Arlington nine grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of other family as well.
The family request memorials to BSA Hospice and Life Enrichment Center of Amarillo.
The body will be available for viewing from 12noon to 8pm Monday.
The family will receive friends from 5-7pm Monday at the funeral home.
