Richard K. Moores, 84, of Amarillo passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.
There will be private family services for Richard. Entombment will be in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.
Mr. Moores was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Texarkana to Tom and Zula Moores. His ancestry came from South Carolina in the 1820s to settle in Mooresville, later named Texarkana.
Richard married Joan Dixon of Texarkana on Feb. 1, 1951. They had one daughter, Heather, on Jan. 15, 1959. He and Joan were happily married for 56 years prior to her death on May 10, 2006.
He entered military service during World War II at the age of 17. His duties were in highly technical development and maintenance of combat aircraft, requiring top secret military clearance, including the position as aviation advisor to the Turkish army. His service included duty in the Pacific during the war as well as two tours in Vietnam. He also served a tour of duty in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
He retired from the military in January 1971. Military sponsored while in services, Richard was a graduate of Amarillo College, the University in Nebraska and obtained a master’s degree in business administration at West Texas State University in Canyon. His post graduate studies were at William and Mary University in Williamsburg, Va.
Following his military retirement, he served as an agent for the IRS in Amarillo for 9 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Heather Morres Bennett and husband retired Col. Drew A. Bennett, USMC; a granddaughter, Alexandra Bennett of West Plains, Mo.; and his dear friend, Becki Zint of Amarillo.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Citychurch Amarillo, 205 S. Polk St., Amarillo, TX 79105.
