Mrs. Pauline “Polly” Giersch, 91 of Amarillo passed away on May 13, 2011.
Services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Coulter Road Chapel with Rev. Scott Richards officiating. Graveside services will follow at Claude Cemetery in Claude, Texas at 4:30 p.m.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at LaGrone- Blackburn-Shaw Coulter Road Funeral Home.
Mrs. Giersch was born on September 3, 1919 in Big Heart, Oklahoma on September 3, 1919 to Issac Newton and Alice Lucinda Villines-Blackwood who farmed near Claude. She graduated from Claude High School in 1937. Her family then moved to Amarillo where she met and married Raymond Giersch in 1938. He preceded her in death in December of 1984. They married on December 24, 1938 and raised their children in Amarillo. Pauline worked with Raymond in their restaurant, Rays Café until 1955 when she began to work at the cafeteria at Amarillo High School. Pauline is fondly remembered for her cinnamon rolls. She retired from the school system in 1979. In 1989, she married Bill Couch. Pauline and Bill were active in the Kiwanis Club and were ombudsmen for state inspections for nursing homes. Bill preceded her in death in 1999. She was the oldest living charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Pauline lived the last 5 years at The Continental where she made many wonderful friends who cared for her. She was also preceded in death by her youngest granddaughter Kathy Giersch and her eldest son John Lloyd Giersch, in 1998.
Survivors: her daughter Gloria Giersch-Vaughn of Sugarland, Texas, and her husband Bill; one son, Guy R. Giersch and his wife Pernie of McKinney, Texas 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
