Paul Russell Haygood, a dedicated professional known for his esteemed career in the newspaper industry, passed away on May 17, 2024. Born on August 6, 1931 in Paulding County, Georgia, Paul’s journey through life was marked by significant accomplishments and unwavering commitment to his work and community.
Paul’s career spanned several decades and was highlighted by key roles at prominent newspapers. Beginning at The Greensboro Daily News and Record as Assistant Circulation Director, he later relocated to Texas, where he held the position of Circulation Director at both the Beaumont Enterprise Journal in Beaumont, and the Amarillo Globe-News in Amarillo. In December 1996, Paul retired after years of dedicated service to the field he loved.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Paul proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. His commitment to service extended into civilian life, where he held notable leadership positions such as President of the Texas Circulation Management Association 1991-1992, and President of Amarillo Rotary South 1996-1997. Additionally, Paul served as Master of Lodge 731 1993-1994.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, William A. Haygood and Mag Nora Haygood, as well as his first wife and mother of his children, Iris O. Haygood, and second wife, Margie Haygood. He is survived by his two daughters, Pamela Woodward of Browns Summit, NC, and Sonya Lukas of Amarillo, TX, grandchildren: Holly, Meggan, David, Grace, and Victoria, and great grandchildren: Alyiah, Athena, Thor, Aislinn, Nova, and Parker.
Paul Haygood will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather by his family and for his contributions to both his profession and community. His dedication to excellence and service leaves a lasting legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
