Mrs. Laughter was born January 17, 1921 on the family ranch southwest of Clayton, NM to John Willard Oliver and Maggie Beckner Oliver. She attended Otto grade school and Mansker High School before graduating from Clayton High School in 1938. Following high school, she worked as a stenographer at the Union County Courthouse.
Mildred married D.W. “Dub” Laughter on December 30, 1945 at her parents’ country home near Clayton. They lived in Espanola and Alamogordo, NM while Dub served as a county supervisor for the Farm Security Administration. Dub and Mildred then farmed near Felt, OK for some eight years before taking over the cattle ranch operations of Mildred’s parents southwest of Clayton on January 1, 1957.
Together, they ran a cow-calf operation on nine sections of ranchland on Carrizo Creek, with its stream-cut terrain, cedar trees and sand hills. Dub and Mildred lived on the ranch until 1967, when they moved into Clayton for health reasons. Dub then commuted to the ranch each morning to run operations until finally retiring at age 87.
Mildred’s domain was her kitchen and she always managed to produce food from the “magic freezer” to feed her hungry boys and their friends, as well as any guest that might drop in. She was extremely proud of her two sons and their families and she loved being “Granny” to her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. While her family was her life, she was also an active member of the First Baptist Church of Clayton and inChapter “W” of P.E.O. Mildred was recently honored at the New Mexico State P.E.O. Convention for over 50 years of service.
Mildred and Dub moved to Amarillo’s Park Central Campus in November of 2003 to be nearer their children. Mildred immediately made new friends and became actively involved on campus as Chairman of the Welcoming Committee. She eventually served as President of the Residents’ Council at the Harrington Assisted Living Center. Mildred and Dub were married for 61 years before he passed away on January 25, 2007.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Johnny Frank Oliver; and her sisters, Sybol Oliver McLaughlin and Helen Rose Oliver.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Laughter and wife Lesli and Larry Laughter and wife Janet, all of Amarillo; three grandsons, Cy Laughter and wife Rose of Fairfax, VA; Ross Laughter and wife Jaime of Prosper; and Clay Laughter of Dallas; a granddaughter, Ashley Laughter of Amarillo; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah Laughter of Fairfax, VA and Audry Laughter of Prosper.
The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, 223 Oak St., Clayton, NM 88415.
Visitation will be Friday, March 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, 8310 S. Coulter Road.
