With sadness, we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Wilson, age 99, in Amarillo, TX.
The family will gather from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2011 at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Coulter Chapel, 8310 Coulter Road to receive guests in Mary Elizabeth’s memory.
Born in Ada, Oklahoma on December 3, 1912, Mary Elizabeth was generous and full of spirit. Her love of music was apparent early, and after graduating from the University of Oklahoma, she moved to New York City to get her master’s degree at Columbia University.
Upon graduation she moved to Amarillo and started her private piano lesson studio. Under her watchful eye, students learned theory, technique, and an appreciation for music. Many female students undoubtedly heard her admonition to cut their fingernails so they didn’t click on the keyboard! Countless students of hers won ribbons in piano competitions, and she took many piano ensemble groups to the Texas Music Teachers’ Association meetings. She was twice recognized as “Music Teacher of the Year” by the Amarillo Music Teachers Association. Devoted to her faith, she became a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church and taught Sunday School classes for many years. She loved meeting her friends for lunch, watching Amarillo grow, and her friend Louella’s sweet potato pie.
Mary Elizabeth is predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.O. Wilson; her sister Catherine Dugger and brother-in-law-Earl, and friend Carol Owens. She is survived by her nieces Carolyn Ewing and husband Ray; Mary Beth Carder; and J.J. Dugger and husband Don Ellis; as well as grand-nephew Joe Carder, grand-nieces Laura Ewing-Moore and Chris Ewing Ladd and family. She is also survived by numerous faithful students and friends. The family would especially like to thank Sharon Oliver, who was like a daughter to Mary Elizabeth. Also, thanks to all the students who have visited over the past several years – she was so pleased to hear from all of you. While all who knew Mary Elizabeth will miss her, we take comfort knowing she is at peace.
At Mary Elizabeth’s request, the family will not hold a memorial service. Generous to the end, Mary Elizabeth arranged to have her body donated to a medical school to further education.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to the charity of your choice, First Presbyterian Church of Amarillo or the Amarillo Music Teachers Association and please play a song on the piano in her memory.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 Thursday evening at the funeral home.
