Mary Etta Ward

February 15, 1922 — September 6, 2010

Mary Etta Ward, 88, went to be with the Lord on September 6, 2010. As desired, she was at home surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death.  Mary Etta, born to Nell and Fred Miller, February 15, 1922, in Lubbock County, was the eldest of eight children.  She married Ardus J. Ward in Malta, Idaho, on February 1, 1946.  The couple lived in several small farming communities in the Lubbock area, before settling in Amarillo in 1960.

Mary Etta graduated from Roosevelt High School.  She attended Texas Tech University and graduated from West Texas State University with a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Education.

She was employed by Amarillo ISD for 28 years, teaching at Robert E. Lee, Coronado, Sanborn, and Belmar.  She retired in 1987. She touched the lives of numerous students, many of whom maintained contact with her over the years and expressed their appreciation for the lasting impact of her guidance. She loved young people and treated all of them just as she did her own children, with love and affection.

Mary Etta and Ardus loved to square dance and were members of the Top Hatters formal dance club and the Starlighters semi-formal dance club.  Mary Etta also enjoyed sewing, reading, and above all spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Terry Ward; her brothers Bob, Bill, Herschel, and Charles; and a great-granddaughter, Kennedy Lynn Ward.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years; two sons, Gary and wife Shana of McKinney, Tx, and Billy and wife Sheryl of Amarillo; two sisters, Joan McCallister and Polly Hamilton and a brother, Don Miller.  Her seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren have been forever blessed by their "Mammy". She is also survived by her best friend, Evelyn Hibbs.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Interim Hospice of Amarillo.
