Mary Alice Lokey Shelton, 72, of Dallas, Texas, slipped away peacefully after a short illness on November 20, 2012. She died the way she lived – surrounded by loving family and friends.
Born March 27, 1940, in Amarillo, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Ted H. and Stella Lokey and the youngest of 3 siblings.
After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1958, she attended Christian College and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She moved to Dallas to work at the flagship Neiman-Marcus store as a Personal Shopper. She returned to Amarillo to work for her father at the Ted Lokey Tire Company. It was there that she met and married James David Shelton, and her two children, Maria Lynn and Raymond Ted, were born. This began the most important chapter of her life, being a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Amarillo Junior League, where her favorite placement jobs were volunteering at Baptist Hospital and testing the hearing of newborns.
The second chapter of her life began when she moved from Amarillo in 1997 to become a full-time grandmother to her two adorable granddaughters, Camille and Eden. This would take her initially to Kansas City, Kansas, then to Raleigh, North Carolina, and ultimately to Dallas, Texas, where she lived the last 8 years until her death. She had an uncanny gift for making and maintaining deep, personal relationships and wherever she went, she collected more and more friends. In an age long before social media, she made it her life’s work to stay in touch with those that mattered most to her, never missing a birthday, anniversary or other important date. She was a lifelong artist and although her work was shown on occasion, she preferred to give her paintings as gifts to special friends. Her devotion to God and her simple, quiet faith carried her through her share of life’s turmoil, which she faced with grace, dignity and awe-inspiring gratitude for all that God had given her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and a countless number of dear friends who will miss her greatly, but are celebrating her homecoming to her Heavenly Creator.
She is preceded in death by her father, Ted H. Lokey; her mother, Stella Yeatts Lokey; and her brother, Ted Y. Lokey.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria Shelton Dameron and beloved son-in-law, Mark Wallace Dameron of Centennial, Colorado; her son, Raymond Ted Shelton of Dallas, Texas; her brother, George H. Lokey of Amarillo, Texas; her sister-in-law, Colleen Lokey of Amarillo, Texas; her two precious granddaughters, Catherine Camille Dameron and Eden Elizabeth Dameron of Centennial, Colorado; as well as 3 nieces and 6 nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 24 at 11:00am at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter, Amarillo, Texas 79119
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to her favorite charity, the Presbyterian Home for Children, 3400 Bowie Street
