Mary Lois Whipple-Drake
June 1, 1933 - April 28, 2014
Mary Lois Whipple-Drake, age 80, of Amarillo went to be with her Lord on Monday, April 28, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. A time for the family to receive friends will be Friday, May 2, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Coulter Road Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 10:00 am at First Baptist Church with Rev. Reed Redus officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Mary was born in Belton to Roy and Euda Mae (Nettles) Yielding on June 1, 1933. She and her family lived several places before settling in Amarillo in 1954. She met the love of her life and later married Joe Dan Whipple, June 22, 1955 in Clovis, NM. He preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Loren Drake in 1984 and he preceded her in death in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Melvin Yielding and Jimmy Yielding and a nephew Melvin Yielding Jr.
Mary's life was focused on her children and grandchildren, to the point of being there each day to pick her grandchildren up from school with a car loaded with drinks and treats for any child leaving school. She loved cooking, especially desserts, doing yard work, working with the Hospital Auxiliary, but especially spending time daily in her spiritual walk with her Lord. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Amarillo.
Survivors include her daughter Linda and husband James Baker of Amarillo and a son Danne and wife Leigh Whipple of Amarillo and her grandchildren Joe Whipple of Houston and Bailey Whipple and fiance Logan Tiffany of Amarillo. She also leaves behind a sister Joyce Keil of Sheridan, WY and three brothers Buddy and wife Ruth Yielding of Belton, J. W. and wife Ann Yielding of Temple and Bill and wife Jere Yielding of Frisco and a sister-in-law Neva Yielding of Las Cruces, NM and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be to Don and Sybil Harrington Cancer Foundation, to benefit the patients at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice, 1600 Wallace Blvd., Amarillo, TX 79106; or First Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 1208 S. Tyler, Amarillo, TX 79101. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice for the love and care they provided.
