Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday July 14, 2012 at
St. John Baptist Church 2301 NW 14th in Amarillo. LaGrone-Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors of Amarillo is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Friday July 13, 2012 from 5-7pm at LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Road Chapel 8310 S. Coulter Rd, Amarillo, TX.
Burial will be in Llano East Cemetery by LaGrone-Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors.
Leslie L. “Les” Gipson Jr. was born on Feb. 7, 1946 in Childress, TX unto Rev. L.L. Gipson Sr. and Bertha Mae Venters Gipson. Mr. Gipson was baptized at the New Hope Baptist Church in Childress, TX at a very young age. He graduated from J.J. Rhoads High School in Childress. He attended the Historical Black Bishop College (Paul Quinn) before he was drafted into the United States Marine Corp. Mr. Gipson was a graduate of West Texas State University.
On November 10, 1965, Mr. Gipson married Minnie F. Rose. They moved to Amarillo in 1968 and united with The Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church in Amarillo, TX. He served on many auxiliaries in the church, as well as Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and BTU Teacher. He was also very active in the Amarillo community as well. He served and worked with The Texas Workforce Commission, Board of Directors for Leadership Amarillo, Vice Commander of the Purple Heart Association and Samaritan Outreach. He was employed at Mason Hanger BWXT Pantex plant for 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Bertha Lee Gaye.
He is survived by his wife Minnie of the home, a daughter Valetta Gipson, two sons, Steve and his wife Latisha and Kyle all of Amarillo. Two sisters, Doris Bailey of Dallas, TX and Shirley Richmond and her husband Robert of Cedar Hill, TX. Nine grandchildren, two aunts and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
