Memorial Service will be at 2p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Craig Methodist Retirement Center with Rev. Kevin Deckard officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by LaGrone-Blackburn- Shaw Funeral Directors, 8310 S. Coulter.
Mr. Bridges was born and raised in Knox City, Texas. He attended John Tarleton Agricultural College in Stephenville, where he majored in Agricultural Education. While at JTCA he was involved in many activities and a fraternity. He played in the band, was head cheerleader, and vice president of the Sons of Tarleton Society. After two years at JTCA he attended Texas A&M at College Station, Texas. Before he obtained his degree he joined the army where he served in World War II. He was stationed at various army posts in the United States. While in the army he married Wilma Hingst. After being honorably discharged from the Army he returned to Texas A&M to receive his degree. Leonard then moved to Littlefield, Texas where he taught school. He then began cotton farming in Anton, Texas and taught veterans classes in agricultural improvements. After moving back to Littlefield he owned and operated a dairy farm for five years. He moved back to Amarillo and worked at the air base, teaching the operations of the jet engine. He worked at Pantex for twenty two years. Leonard enjoyed traveling, gardening dancing, and the theater. He also enjoyed church activities and collecting antiques. Leonard and Wilma have been married for sixty eight years.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Leonard Nichols Bridges Sr. and Florence Simmons Bridges. One sister and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife Wilma. Two daughters Nicki Heyd and husband Howard of Granada Hills, California and Karen Smith and husband Donnie of Amarillo, four grandchildren, Gina Middleton and husband Bruce of Albuquerque, NM; Julie Gillen and husband Dann of Simi Valley, CA; Jerrod Smith and wife Claire of Houston and Carey Moore and husband Todd of Amarillo; and ten great grandchildren. One sister-in-law Elaine Rowland of Houston.
