José was born on May 11, 1923 in Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico to José Hernández who was a veteran in the Mexican Revolution and Domitila Ramirez, his wife. He came to the United States as a Bracero when he was 17 years old, but in order to work, he stated that he was 18. He never let the fact that he was an immigrant keep him from achieving his goals. He married Esperanza Ramos and together, they raised 11 children. He learned English and eventually, he became a U.S. Citizen. Jose worked for more than 30 years as a machinist for Amarillo Gear Company. He had an endless amount of patience, a sharp sense of humor and was a fountain of knowledge. José was a good provider for his family and always encouraged his family to work hard and "echarle ganas". José spent his time providing for his family, recycling aluminum cans, working on his ranch and taking care of his livestock.
After retiring, he enjoyed bird watching on the porch and spending time with his grandkids. He was the best daddy and grandpa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Esperanza; one son, Clemente Hernández, one brother, Felipe Hernández; one sister, Esperanza Barraza and one granddaughter, Marianna Hernández.
Those left to cherish his memory are 6 daughters, Juanita Garcia, Rosa Pope and husband Robert, Esperanza Alegria and husband Tomás, Lupe Reynoso and husband Elpidio, Maria Celaya and husband Gerardo and Josefina Hernández; 5 sons, Xavier Hernández, George Hernández and wife Beatriz, Martin Hernández, Jesse Hernández and wife Beatrice and Jimmy Hernández and wife Dolores.
