Johnny Barker, 71, went to be with the Lord on July 18, 2024.
Johnny Lee Barker was born August 11, 1952 in Hays, Kansas to John David and Joann Barker, the oldest of 6 kids. After winning back-to-back state championships in football in 1970 and 1971, he graduated from Helena High School, then went onto Northwestern Oklahoma State University. While refereeing a game, he caught the heart of his soon to be wife, Jan, who realized she was in love. He graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a Bachelor’s in 1976 and a master’s in education in 1979. He was a high school math teacher and a coach at several schools, including Tyrone, OK, Dexter, KS, Dalhart, TX, Lefors, TX, and Borger, TX. He also taught for Frank Phillips College and at the Dalhart Unit. Johnny and Jan were married for 49 wonderful years. They had 5 children together, Jodi, Jami, John, Josh and Tammy “Joanna”, 10 grandchildren, Jessica, Elijah, Ethan, Brody, John Mason, Jace and 4 heavenly grandbabies. He loved his family and was a devoted OU Sooner and Dallas Cowboy fan. He loved reading his Bible, playing dominoes, Sudoku, all sports and watching his grandkids play. He was a part time preacher, a foster dad, a Boy Scout leader, and a coach for many years. He also officiated the weddings for two of his kids and his granddaughter. He was a man of faith and pointed his family to Jesus. He was always there for his family, full of patience and even-tempered. He was a grandfatherly figure to Ryan, Kathy, Dylan, Xavier, Lexie, and Sheldon and many others as well.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Joann Barker, two nephews and a niece.
He is survived by his wife Jan Barker of Amarillo and his children, Jason and Jodi Tuminello, Dalton and Jami Hanes, John and Rachael Barker, Ryan and Tammy “Joanna” Smith, all of Amarillo and Josh Barker of Houston. His grandchildren Jacob and Jessica Habel of Amarillo, Elijah Cost of Prescott Valley, AZ, Ethan Cost of Las Vegas, NV, Brody Hanes, John Mason Barker and Jace Barker, of Amarillo.
