BIOGRAPHY: John was born January 12, 1927 in Paris, Texas to Floyd and Helen Rains. He married Thelma House on May 8, 1948 at the First Methodist Church in Austin. They had been married for 62 years. After graduating from Paris High School, John attended East Texas State University. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Navy at eh age of 17. He was assigned to the USS Circe and USS Lexington and saw action in the Solomon Islands, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He was especially proud to be a member of the inaugural Honor Flight to Washington D.C. John was an accomplished photographer, stained glass artisan, and silversmith. He enjoyed ranching, fishing, and telling wonderful stories. He was very passionate about archaeology and he worked for the University of Texas writing several articles for publication.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen Rains; a brother Thomas and a sister Elizabeth Page.
Survivors: his wife, Thelma Rains; a daughter Toinette Grifford and husband David of Amarillo; 2 Sons John Robert Rains and wife Larisa of San Antonio; Joe De Lanus Rains of Rockwall, TX; 3 Granddaughters Melynda Grifford-Vaughan and husband James of Amarillo; Ashley and Alyssa Rains both of Austin.
