Jack Donald Moss
1923-2016
Jack Donald Moss, 93, of Amarillo went to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, November 6, 2016. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2016 in the Tascosa Road Fellowship Chapel, 200 Tascosa Road, with Associate Pastor Victor Young officiating. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.
Jack was born March 18, 1923, in Clarendon, Texas to Nona and Rice Scudder Moss. He married Nellie Jo Rexrode in Clovis, New Mexico in 1946, and together they celebrated more than 35 years of marriage. Jack owned and operated Moss Automotive in Amarillo until his retirement. Jack and Nellie were the proud parents of two sons Jack Wayne Moss and Joe Douglas Moss and a daughter Sandra Kay Moss. Jack joined the Texas National Guard on October 25, 1940 before Pearl Harbor was bombed, bringing the United States into WW II on December 7, 1941. Jack was a member to the Texas Lost Battalion who were taken prisoners of war in 1942. Jack was a Japanese prisoner of war for 3 ½ years in Burma and forced to work on the Death Railroad. Less than half of the Texas Lost Battalion survived this ordeal. Jack returned to the United Stated in 1945, after the end of the war. In addition to owning and operating Moss Automotive, Jack was the first Instructor of Auto Mechanics at Amarillo College. During his automotive career, Jack was a renowned member of the racing community. Jack built and drove circle track racecars, dragsters and enduro motorcycles during his career. Jack won many state titles during his racing endeavors. In 2012, Jack was presented with the coveted National Hotrod Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Jo in 1980 and sons, Joe Douglas Moss in 1986 and Jack Wayne Moss in 2015; granddaughters June Lynn Nettleton in 2008 and Amy Charlene Rose in 2015. Jack was also preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, one brother and his second wife, Maude Cordellia.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Kay and William L. Hanna; granddaughters Jenny Dawn Hunkin and husband Mickey; Christi Ann Hairston and husband John and grandson, Lindsey Rhea Moss and wife Misty. Jack is also survived by 12 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
