Jack J. Hern, 88, of Amarillo died Friday, March 2, 2012. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw, Coulter Chapel with the Rev. Ray Franks officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Military honors rendered by the Marine Corps. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St.
Jack was born June 10, 1923, in Roy, N.M., to Andrew and Eula Hern. He graduated high school from Solano High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1942, and was honorably discharged in 1945. He then obtained his bachelor’s degree in elementary education at New Mexico State University, where he also received his master’s degree in administration. He worked in the education field for more than 46 years at Clovis Independent School district helping in federal grant programs at the central office. Jack married Juanita L. Willeford in 1988 in Las Vegas. Together they lived in Clovis before moving to Amarillo in 2000.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold Hern.
Survivors include his wife, Nita Hern of Amarillo; two daughters, Karen Deets and husband Mac of Ruidoso, N.M. and Donna Goodwin and husband Roger of Santa Fe, N.M.; a son, Timothy Hern and wife Gina of Bellvue, Neb.; a stepson, Brit Van Sickel of Dumas; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Wuertenberger and husband Ryan and Erin Mooring and husband Brandon; two stepgranddaughters, Katie Van Sickel and Monica Van Sickel; and two great-grandchildren, Zackary Wuertenberger and Elise Mooring.
The family will receive guests from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
