Hazel Lorena Newman

November 8, 1908 — December 14, 2011

Hazel G. Newman, 103 of Amarillo passed away on December 14, 2011.  Her Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am Monday December 19, 2011 in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum with Rev. Kevin Deckard of Polk Street United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Coulter Rd. Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter, Amarillo, TX

The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 pm Sunday at the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Newman was born on November 8, 1908 in Beaver County, OK to Ben and Sara Cravey Green on the farm they had homesteaded.  Hazel attended Amarillo High School for one year. She then attended and graduated from Booker High School.  She married W.C. “Skinny” Newman in 1930 in Amarillo, while he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad.  Hazel was a long time member of Polk Street United Methodist and the Suzanna Wesley Sunday School class.  Hazel worked for G.M.A.C. and then later for the Potter County Rationing Board during the WWII. She was an outstanding seamstress  and made many of the clothes for her family and friends.  She also loved quilting and made many quilts for her family and as items to be sold to raise money for her Church, Sunshine Cottage and other charities.  Hazel had impaired hearing and wore hearing aids all of her adult life, but that never slowed her down in her work for her family and Church.  Mrs. Newman moved to San Antonio several years ago to be near her daughter and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Earl and Raymond Green; and her sister,  Alice Green Hoover.

Survivors include her son, Don and wife Berniece Newman of Ft. Worth; her daughter, Janet Newman Hughes of San Antonio; four gandchildren, Mark and wife Janet Newman of Amarillo; Karen and husband David Pronger of Burleson; Scott and wife Maria Hughes and Eric Hughes of San Antonio and eight great-grandchildren.
