Harper was born in Wheeler, Texas on July 31, 1939 to Thomas Jesse and May Morehead Muse. He grew up on the farm by Briscoe, Tx with his older brother, Eddie (E.J.). He attended Briscoe school, then joined the Navy. Harper was on the USS Cimarron. After his service in the navy, he married the love of his life, Betty Caswell on January 16, 1961. They shared 58 years together before Betty passed away in 2019. Harper and Betty, along with their two children, Misty and Todd lived in Pampa, Wheeler and Clarendon, where they worked hard raising their family and creating many great memories. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and trap shooter. He was definitely happiest in the mountains with a fishing pole in his hands. Harper retired from Greenbelt Water Authority in 2000 and that’s when the fun really began. They sold their home and lived full time in their fifth wheel camping trailer. They spent the summers being the camp hosts at the Maverick Campground in Cimarron Canyon. They had the best times and made so many good friends there. The grandkids loved going to the mountains and spending time there. Cimarron Canyon was his favorite place, and it was years later that he discovered the ship he was on, The USS Cimarron was actually named after the Cimarron River and the bell from the ship is in front of the school in Cimarron. Their winters were spent going south to the Rio Grand Valley. There they made friends from all over the U.S. and Canada. Down South, they spent most of their time playing shuffleboard. They entered tournaments and were quite the competitors! They were so happy during those years, traveling and making friends from everywhere. They eventually settled in Amarillo at Country Estates. There, the fun continued. They made many more special friends and were always busy doing something. In November 2023, he moved to The Legacy at Town Square, where he continued to meet people and make friends. Many games of Bingo and Skip Bo and dominoes were played. He was happy there and loved the residents and the staff there.

Through all of life’s adventures, the most important thing to Harper, was his relationship with his Lord and Savior. His last words to one of the grandsons, was “Make sure your life is right with the Lord”. His faith was very important to him and he wanted to be a good example to everyone he knew.

Harper is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and May Muse, his brother E.J. Muse and his wife Betty Muse. He is survived by daughter Misty and husband Sieto Mellema of Dalhart, son, Todd Muse of Amarillo, Grandsons, Tammo Mellema, Matt Mellema and wife Kali, Mitchell Mellema and fiancé Alyssa Nials and Max Muse.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at The Legacy at Town Square and all of the many people at BSA that treated him with so much care and respect.
