Mrs. Freeman was born March 15, 1922, in Goodlett (Hardeman County near Childress), to Stella and Jim Howard. Her family moved to Amarillo not long thereafter. She attended public schools in Amarillo. After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1939 she attended Amarillo College. Floy later served as secretary for Cal Farley. A highlight of Floy’s life was singing with her brother Gib, and other friends on the Cal Farley Radio Show. On Friday nights they traveled to surrounding towns to perform for the schools and on Saturday mornings, they performed at the Paramount Theatre Kiddie Matinee. Mr. Farley also took the singing group to tour New York City, including the New York World’s Fair. Floy married her high school sweetheart, Joe Freeman, on June 17, 1941. They were married for 68 years until Joe’s passing on August 31, 2009. Floy and Joe were lifelong members of San Jacinto Methodist Church. Floy was an avid artist who loved to paint fine china. She also enjoyed collecting art, entertaining and cooking, all while keeping an immaculate home. Floy was an advocate of the arts who loved to attend performances at the Amarillo Opera, Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Little Theatre, Amarillo College, and the Branding Iron Theatre in Canyon. She worked for Dr. William Hale, ENT, in Amarillo for over 30 years. Later, she owned Garb, a vintage clothing store on Sixth Street, and was fondly remembered by her clientele for her sense of style.
