Ernest Cruz, 83, of Amarillo died Sunday, March 20, 2011.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
Ernest was born on Sept. 25, 1927, in Pasamonte, N.M., to Arturo and Delcina Cruz. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, and was discharged in 1948. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949, serving in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1952. Ernest married Helen Blan on April 14, 1956, in Clayton, N.M. He enjoyed reading his Bible and was known for his caring smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Estella Cruz, in 1984; and several brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Cruz of Amarillo; three sons, Ernie Cruz and wife Vanessa of Amarillo, John Cruz and wife April of Eustis, Fla., and Dave Cruz of Amarillo; daughter, Dorothy Cruz of Amarillo; two brothers, John Cruz and wife Dolores and Henry Cruz and wife Jennie all of Garden City, Kan.; a sister, Florenda Cervantez and husband George of Emporia, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
