Donna was born Sept. 20, 1937, in Iola, Kan., to Russell E. and Ruth Lam McHenry. She was raised in Iola and graduated from high school there. Donna’s early life consisted of traveling with the military, including Guam. She moved to Amarillo in 1972, and worked for 20 years with Data Tech and ultimately retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in 2006. She married Art Conway in 1997.
One of Donna’s proudest accomplishments was her 40 years of sobriety. She was an active member in Alcoholics Anonymous in Amarillo and sponsored many on their own roads to recovery. She was a member at Covenant Fellowship Church and was grateful for the support of the members in transporting her to services on a regular basis.
She enjoyed music and played many musical instruments. She was a voracious reader, loved crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Her greatest joy was playing with her grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art Conway; and a brother, Gene McHenry.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Moreno and husband Michael of Amarillo and Cari Pepper of Battle Ground, Wash.; a son, Toby Tate and wife Laura of Elizabeth City, N.C.; five grandchildren, Nicole and Kaitlin Pepper and Canton and Cooper Moreno and Zoe Tate; five stepchildren, Stephany Loveday and husband Keith, Margie Vitale, Patricia Stevens, Fletcher Ready and wife Jaime and Elisa Crawford and husband Ray; a sister, Janice Smith of Bella Vista, Ark.; and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be to Covenant Fellowship Church, 1739 S. Avondale St., Amarillo, TX 79106.
