Dewey H. Helms, 92, of Amarillo died on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 11, 2017 in Memory Gardens Cemetery with Pastor Randy Davis of Lifeway Fellowship Baptist Church, officiating.
Dewey was born on February 24, 1924 in DeQueen, Arkansas to James William and Mary Jane Helms. As a young boy he moved with his family to Vernon, Texas. He joined the United States Army Air Corps on February 12, 1943 serving in the European Theater under General Patton. He was honorably discharged on December 16, 1945.
Dewey married his sweetheart Mary Blackwood on May 23, 1946 in Tolbert, Texas. They moved to Amarillo in 1952 where he worked as a truck driver for the City of Amarillo. Later he worked as a plumber for AISD and he was a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Helms; several nieces and nephews; his special friends at the Donut Stop and his coffee group friends.
The family suggests memorials to BSA Hospice of the Southwest.
