David Wayne Cates, 84, passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024, in Amarillo, TX. He was born on March 25, 1940, to Glen and Lucille Cates. His parents gave him the nickname "Doodle Bug" and it followed him through life, with love from his family. He completed high school and served as a private in the army in Germany for a few years working on tanks. He married his first wife Glenda Smith on March 3, 1958, and then married Rosa Cates on February 12, 1984.
He is preceded in death by his son, David Glen Cates, daughter Cynthia Gaye Cates, his parents, Glen and Lucille Cates, his wife, Rosa Cates, two stepsons, Gavino Rodriguez and Joe Rodriguez, and a stepdaughter Nora Rodriguez.
He is survived by his sister Daisy Glenette Cates, son Tony Wayne Cates, daughter Kelly Jolene Cates, stepdaughters Dora Herrera, Virginia Luevano, and Linda Davis, stepsons Johnny Rodriguez and Larry Rodriguez, niece Rebecca Vessel, grandchildren T.J. (Kerry) Cates, Jesse Hulen, David Cates, Jeremy (Katy) Christian Neely, granddaughters, Heather Thebo, Sarah Neely, Brittney King, Taylor Vasquez, Amanda Herrera and Jessica Bernal, and Jennifer Hulen. He had a total of fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Mr. Cates was a painter and had his own company called D.W. Cates Painting. David liked football, baseball, and playing pool. He remodeled other homes along with his own. He was a loving, caring, and compassionate person. He will be dearly missed.
