Clay was born to William and Betty Gibson on June 26, 1957 at Itazuke Air Force Base in Fukuoka, Japan. Raised in El Paso, Texas, he attended Coronado High School, and received his Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice from The University of Texas at El Paso. Clay started his law enforcement career as a police officer, spending over 8 years combined time with the Las Cruces, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, Police Departments. Clay had a longstanding and distinguished career as a Senior Investigator with The U.S. Department of Labor in both El Paso and Amarillo, TX. He was a recognized expert in the formulation of national strategy in criminal law enforcement within the Wage and Hour Division. In addition to El Paso and Amarillo, Clay worked special assignments in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Clay was a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle to a close and extended family, a friend and supporter to many people throughout his personal and professional life, and an untiring and steadfast advocate for countless workers throughout the greater Texas and New Mexico region. Clay loved spending quality time with family and friends, enjoyed reading, history, law, collecting antique replicas, fishing and spending time in the great outdoors.
He is preceeded in death by his mom, Betty McElhannon-Gibson; first wife, Judith Shelton-Gibson; and sister Julia Gibson.
His survivors include his loving wife of 22 years Patricia Gibson; Son, Joshua William Gibson of Amarillo, Texas; daughter, Janelle Marie Gibson of Amarillo, Texas; father, William “Hoot” Gibson and wife June of Angel Fire, New Mexico; brother, Mark Gibson of Rio Rico, Arizona; brother, Brock Gibson and wife Diana of White Salmon, Washington; sister, Cheryl Cunningham and husband Joe of Friona, Texas; brother, Thad Gibson and wife Martha of Parker, Colorado; granddaughters, Alyson and Brianna Gibson of Brownfield, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
