Carlos M. Royo was born on September 30, 1944 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Carlos obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and his Masters and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Tulane University. He demonstrated extreme dedication and competency throughout his 40+ year career while working for Cities Services/Occidental Petroleum, but his favorite job was his last with Continental Resources. He enjoyed golf, racquetball, sailing, travel, fishing, and tennis. He held a great disdain for fiscal irresponsibility, heavy forestation on golf courses, and jewelry stores.
Carlos fought a courageous battle against a disease called Multiple System Atrophy. MSA falls under a group of diseases titled Parkinson’s Plus syndrome but it has a much less favorable prognosis than Parkinson’s disease. These brain disorders are devastating and research to find cures are essential. He faced his illness with unwavering positivity and an amazing sense of humor that enriched all those around him. Carlos felt strongly about organ donation and decided to lose his mind in Lubbock, Texas by donating his brain to the Garrison Institute on Aging.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rei and Josefina Royo
Survivors include his ever-cleaning and loving wife Stephanie, his bio-engineered, mini-me daughter Kristin Crowley and the greatest golfer Carlos has ever seen in person, her husband John. Carlos has four surviving brothers, Rei (Nora), Mike (Xiaohui), Jose (Alice), Norman (Barbara).
In lieu of flowers (because you will be too late and Carlos did not agree with the utility of a perishable decoration), please make a contribution to the Garrison Institute at Texas Tech www.ttuhsc.edu/aging or the Mary E. Bivins Foundation in Amarillo, Texas
