Betty Jean Jones Ferguson

March 25, 1928-May 6, 2015

Betty Jones Ferguson, 87, our sweet Mom, Grandma, Mawmaw, and Great Gran, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Memorial Services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 9 at LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Coulter Road Chapel with Pastor Kyle Wilkinson of Trinity Fellowship officiating. Arrangements are by LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Home 8310 S. Coulter.

Betty was born March 25, 1928, in Tona, Texas (population 45), to Myrtle and Elmer Earnheart. Her family moved to Dallas and later to Terrell, Texas, where she worked for an ice cream company until graduation in 1944.

After high school she attended business college and began working as a secretary in Dallas. She met G.L. (Buddy) Jones at a “dive” in Dallas in 1951 during his military leave. He later called her from Hawaii and proposed over the phone, and they married in 1952. They lived in Dallas, Lubbock, Clovis, Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Farmington, and Phoenix, where Buddy died in 1989. At that time she moved to Amarillo, and in 1998 she married William L. Ferguson, who passed away in 2014.

Betty’s life was marked by sweetness and service. From the way she answered the phone to her deep commitment to Jesus, a gentle and quiet spirit was the hallmark of her life. As a mom, she always made time for card games and camping. In the kitchen, she could make a mean batch of Swedish meatballs, divinity, or a fruit salad topped mile-high with Cool Whip.
She had an affinity for angels, square dancing, and John Wayne. She was famous for her biscuits and gravy, though she herself detested gravy. Her greatest attribute was her love for people, continuously displayed in her service to her local church through choir, food ministry, and other benevolence. In her later years, she found great joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sleepovers, swimming, and playing “office” were staples at Grandma’s house.

Betty is survived by a brother, T.W. Earnheart and wife Kay of Silver City, NM; a son, Chuck Jones of Amarillo; a daughter, Gwen McGranahan and husband Marc of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren: Beth Talley and husband Bob of Amarillo; Jon Michael Jones and wife Rebecca of Amarillo; Michael McGranahan of Albuquerque; Kira Ruffino and husband Luke of Bosque Farms, NM; and Sean Jones of Amarillo; and six great grandchildren: Haley Ruffino of Bosque Farms, NM; Charlie and Callan Talley and Aylah, Charlotte, and Ruby Jones, all of Amarillo.
