Bernice Kilgore, 70, of Amarillo died on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Funeral service will be at 1:00pm, Tuesday, February 23, 2016 in Saint John Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Llano Cemetery East. LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors, Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road.
Bernice Kilgore was born October 9, 1945 in Carlsbad, New Mexico to E.G. Griffin and Bertha Harden and was the youngest of six children. She grew up in Muleshoe TX and attended Dunbar High School in Lubbock Texas. Bernice was married to Clarence Dever in 1965 and had three daughters Laura Flanagan, Carolyn Dever, Christina Bryant and adopted daughter, DeAndra Williams. She later divorced and married Hobert Kilgore Jr. in 1978 and had a daughter Tracy Kilgore and son Hobert Kilgore III. Bernice was employed by St. Anthony’s Hospital for fourteen years and served nine and a half years at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Neal Unit. Bernice raised her family on Sixteenth Street, in North Heights, for over forty years. Bernice was a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother. She cared about everyone she crossed paths with, which is evident by the number of extended family members she cared for, nurtured, and loved. She was a member of St. John Baptist church for over 40 years and served the Lord in a variety of positions. Bernice had a strong faith and relationship with Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings, husband and eldest daughter.
She is survived by her sister Bertha Jefferson, six children DeAndra Williams, Carolyn Dever, Christina Bryant, Tracy Kilgore, Hobert Kilgore and step-son Cletus Williams, son-in-law Earl Flanagan; 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and adopted children.
Family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Monday, February 22, 2016 at the funeral home.
