Barbara Sue Johnson, 72, of Amarillo passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2017. Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at 2:00 pm on Thursday, December 7, 2017 in Harvest Time Pentecostal Church, 409 S Cleveland with Duane Bilderback and Carol Messer, co officating. Arrangements are under the personal care of LaGrone Blackburn Shaw Funeral Directors, 8310 S. Coulter Road.
Barbara was born on December 16, 1944 in Princeton, West Virginia to Louis and Katie Mathena where she grew up. She married George Johnson on July of 1965 in West Virginia and the family later moved to Amarillo in 1974. Barbara worked at Phillips 66 briefly and was a housewife. Barbara enjoyed playing the guitar and singing gospel songs to the Lord. Monday nights were reserved for playing Uno card games. She loved her family and will be remembered for her quote, “love to eat and eat to live.”
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George and a brother, Linister Mathena.
She is survived by two daughters, Sabrina Johnson and husband Ronnie Kalt and Christina Varner and husband Brett; a brother, Darral Mathena and wife Willie; three sisters, Helen Paitsel and husband Richard, Dorothy Boyett and husband Rick and Mazie Richards, and five grandchildren, Dawson Johnson, Landon Johnson, Gavon Johnson, Angel Varner, and Gabriel Varner.
