Audrey Louise Moffat

July 4, 1925 — April 18, 2021

Audrey Louise Moffat was born on July 4, 1925, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her parents were Charles and Mabel (Freeman) Peek. She had two older brothers, Allen and Harry, and one younger brother, Charles.

Audrey graduated from Hughes High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1943. After graduation, Audrey attended The Jewish Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated on February 21, 1946. Following graduation, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, to be near her younger brother, who was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base.

Audrey began her nursing career in the Obstetrics Ward at a local hospital in San Antonio, Texas, in 1946. She left her position as an OB nurse after a short time and became a private duty nurse. She worked as a nurse for 25 plus years. She was also a certificated rescue swimmer.

Audrey married John Moffat on June 4, 1949, at Christ Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas. They were married for 32 years, and they had four children together - Esther Louise York, Carol Ann Winfield, Bonnie Sue Moffat, and Thomas Charles Moffat.

Audrey moved to Jackson, Mississippi, and spent her time with her life partner, Bill Simmons until his death in 2006. She continued working for Sara Lee Hosiery in Jackson until her retirement on July 5, 1989.

Audrey held a variety of interests. In her youth, she played the Hawaiian guitar. As an adult, Audrey enjoyed square dancing, target practice, motorcycle riding, traveling, collecting crystal figurines, reading (her favorite author was Louis L’Amour), watching old western movies featuring John Wayne, crocheting, coloring, completing the daily crossword puzzle in her local newspaper, and eating out at Captain D’s or her favorite Mexican restaurant. She also enjoyed regular telephone calls and visits from her children and relatives such as nephew Mark Peek, and frequent visits with her beloved friend and neighbor, Rita Nelson.

Audrey was raised in the Christian faith and remained devoted throughout her life. Like her own mother, Audrey possessed a quiet faith filled with daily prayer and conversations with God.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, husband, life partner, and daughter Carol Ann Winfield and son-in law Jim Winfield. She is survived by her children Esther York and son-in-law Doug York, Bonnie Moffat, Thomas Charles Moffat; grandchildren Stephen York and wife Sharon York, Catherine York, Jason Winfield, Rachel Moffat and boyfriend Braiden Simpson; great-grandchildren Preston Ballard and wife Shelby Ballard, Tammy Austin and wife Krista Austin, Tony York, Thomas York and girlfriend Madison Robert, Tiffany York, nephew Mark Peek, beloved friend Rita Nelson, and numerous nephews and nieces.
