Arthur C. Smith Jr. died on October 14, 2010 at the VA hospital while in hospice care. Art’s body has been donated to Texas Tech Medical center. He was raised in Bastrop, TX and graduated high school as Salutatorian in 1941. He entered the Army Air Corp. and Became a Fighter Pilot flying P 40’s. After WWII, he became a recruiter with the 4th Army in Amarillo in 1946 where he met and married his wife, Gene Salmons. He was a meteorologist for 26 years in the Air Force. After retirement, Art was an appraiser for the City of Amarillo. He graduated from Baptist SW Seminary in 1980. Art worked at Faith City Ministries, Teen Challenge and numerous convalescent homes as Chaplain. He was an active member of St. Steven’s United Methodist Church in many phases of ministry. He also was a Gideon for the past 40 years. Art loved his family, friends, and Jesus Christ whom he witnessed for every day.
He is survived by his wife Gene; three children, David, Mark, and Penny; and two grandchildren, Evan and Sommer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations go to Disabled Veterans or Alzheimer Foundation.
