,Mary Alice Wilson Elliott, 90, of Amarillo passed away on Sunday, July 3, 2011.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Paul United Methodist Church. Graveside memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in McLean Cemetery in McLean. Arrangements are by LaGrone-Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Coulter Road Chapel, 8310 S. Coulter St. in Amarillo, Texas.
Mary Alice was born July 25, 1920, on a farm near McLean to Alice and Frank Pierce Wilson. She graduated as valedictorian in 1937 from Gruver High School. She attended Amarillo College and received a degree in music education from WTSU. She taught one year in Shamrock Schools.
During World War II, she worked at McLean, Texas, German Prisoner of War Camp as a subsistence clerk and in a similar position at Amarillo Air Force Base.
In September 1946, she married Dwight Leroy Elliott. She worked several years in the Potter County Tax Office, and as a loan officer at Amarillo Federal Credit Union. For 30 years, Mary Alice served as a Potter County Democratic Election judge.
Mary Alice and Dwight were charter members of St. Paul United Methodist Church. A devoted member of St. Paul, she sang in the choir, played in the hand bell choir, and was actively involved with United Methodist Women. As part of St. Paul's volunteer program, she delivered Meals on Wheels until shortly before her death.
A mentor for the HOSTS program at Amarillo ISD's Margaret Wills Elementary School from the creation of the program, Mary Alice continued with this activity when it became America's Promise and participated through May 2011. Mary Alice also served as president of WSCS for a time at Saint Stephen United Methodist Church.
She was past president of the Southwest Osteopathic Guild and of Harmony and McDowell Music Clubs. She also worked in the Well-Baby Clinic at Wesley Community Center and was president of its board of directors when its new building was built. Mary Alice also sang baritone with Amarillo's chapter of Sweet Adelines from the inception of the group and for many years afterward.
With husband Dwight, she was a member of Saints and Spinners Square Dance Club, later of Amarillo Squares, and Amarounds Round Dance Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Georgia Hale; and a great-granddaughter, America Weatherford.
Survivors include her sons, Dale Wilson Elliott and wife Katrina of Amarillo and Dwight LaMar Elliott and wife Vonnita of Topeka, Kan. Grandchildren include Mary Crist and husband Andy, Sherie White, Carina Weatherford and husband Brandon, all of Amarillo, Jennifer Masters and husband Jacob of Edmond, Okla., and Karamae and Dustin Legler of Topeka. She also is survived by great-grandchildren, Autumn Summers, Jordan Bryant, Joshua and Sarah Crist, Eleanor Masters, and Charity and Collin Legler; a niece and nephew, their families, and several cousins.
